Five Potential Pickups - 1/5/08

By: David Lister

Here at the Fantasy Sports Review we’re going to start a new weekly column, five potential pickups. Check it out to find out who the top movers are in the world of fantasy sports.

1. Antonio Daniels, Washington Wizards

Daniels returned to the Wizards starting lineup earlier this week after a knee injury and averaged 16 points and 3.5 assists in two games. The fourth overall pick from the 1997 draft has shown little in his career that would suggest he is a viable fantasy option, but with Gilbert Arenas still on the shelf after knee surgery and the rest of the Wizards backcourt comprising of Roger Mason, DeShawn Stevenson and Nick Young, a career year is possibly in store for Daniels. Still, unless you are in a deep league he should be nothing more than a short-term fix.

2. Francisco Garcia, Sacramento Kings

Chances are Garcia has already been picked up in your league, but I mention him here for a couple of reasons. One, as a starter his numbers have been fabulous (18.9 ppg, 4.3 rbg and 2.4 apg), and he’s likely be in the starting lineup until Ron Artest returns from elbow surgery in either late January or early February. Second, he has a history with Kings coach Reggie Theus, who was an assistant under Rick Pitino at Louisville. Also, with Mike Bibby returning to practice this week and Kevin Martin hoping to come back on January 8 you might be able to get him for cheap. Garica’s minutes may be inconsistent, but his upside is worth the risk.

3. Jeff Green, Seattle Supersonics

Green has started the past three games in place of Damien Wilkins, averaging 16 points and four rebounds. I’m normally against owning rookies unless they have Kevin Durant-type talent, but Green seems to be avoiding the kind of foul trouble that normally plagues first-year players. Green’s block number have also increased over the past month, and as long as he’s getting consistent minutes he should be able to provide you with one to two blocks per game.

4. Mike Conley, Memphis Grizzlies

Another likeable rookie, Conley returned to action this week after missing 20 games due to a shoulder injury and was placed in the starting lineup his second week back. While his scoring ability isn’t really there yet, he will help with assists and possibly steals. If he gets his scoring average up to his Ohio State average (11.4 ppg), Conley will be a nice backup to have on your team.

5. Bonzi Wells, Houston Rockets

Wells is getting more minutes because of Tracy McGrady’s injury, and though McGrady is scheduled to return this week his medical history makes Wells a worthwhile pickup. Also, Wells numbers as a starter (11 ppg, 5 rbg, 2.5 apg) are pretty similar to his bench numbers (10.3 ppg, 5.8 rbg, 1.3 apg). Besides, Bonzi has the most underrated name in all of sports, and that always helps team morale.
