Five Potential Pickups

By: David Lister

1. Jamario Moon, Toronto Raptors

Moon has been starting for a while now, so you should know the name already. What you may not know is that his shooting percentage is consistently rising (43.8 in November, 44.3 in December and 52.6 through four games this January). He’s also providing 1.7 blocks and 6.4 rebounds per game. In deep leagues if he’s available, snap him up quickly.

2. Yi Jianlian, Milwaukee Bucks

Jianlian is another rookie who has made an immediate impact, averaging 10.5 ppg, 6.1 rpg and starting every game this year. If only he were center eligible. Otherwise, he’s just a nice backup forward to have on your fantasy squad, but one with upside.

3. Kurt Thomas, Seattle Supersonics

The veteran has stepped into the void known as the Sonics starting center, and played surprisingly well. He won’t give you many points, but he’s averaging 9.8 rpg and in December he averaged 1.5 blocks per game. You can never have too many centers, and you could do a lot worse than Thomas.

4. James Jones, Portland Trail Blazers

Jones is averaging 10.4 ppg in only 23 minutes of action a night, causing many fantasy owners to wonder why he isn’t getting more playing time. Jones has been an outstanding three-point shooter this year (54 percent), but that’s about all he does. Still, if he ever gets 30 minutes a game he’ll be a fantasy stud.

5. Anthony Carter, Denver Nuggets

Carter became the Nuggets starting point guard about a month ago and he’s played pretty well since, averaging 8.5 points and 6.2 assists a game. He won’t put up points consistently, but you remember our pace factor discussion, right? Guys who play 30 minutes a night on the fastest-paced team in the league are never bad guys to have on your team.
