Getting Ready For Fantasy Baseball

FSR is proud to present you our newest daily column, Getting Ready For Fantasy Baseball. This column will include short thoughts and advice on the upcoming fantasy baseball season. Enjoy.

Today we’re going to talk about what we learned from the first round of last year’s draft–draft a position player.

The debate last year was whether the number one pick should have been Albert Pujols or Johan Santana (turns out the answer was A-Rod). King Albert had a nice year (.327, 32, 103), while Santana had his worst year since he became a regular starter (15-13, 3.33).

Regardless of what pitcher you are considering using your first-round pick on this year, don’t. Pitchers as a group are simply too inconsistent and their main stat, wins, is really a team stat. The goal in any fantasy draft is to take sure things in the early rounds and to take educated risks later in the draft.

For example, check out this outrageously early mock draft from the Fantasy Baseball Cafe. No pitchers are taken until pick 13 and only four pitchers are taken in the first three rounds. Get at least one star position player before you even look at a pitcher.
