Ben Sheets leaves game with triceps strain

By: Tom Alexander

MILWAUKEE — Ben Sheets left Friday night’s gem with a triceps strain. At present, the Brew Crew have not released any further information about the timetable for his return. Reportedly, Sheets felt the pain after the third inning and gutted it out for two more innings (of shutout ball, obviously) before Ned Yost insisted he be removed from the game. Sheets indicated to reporters that he could’ve kept going; which is encouraging. At the same time he admitted to reporters that the problem has been going on for some time and not getting better, which is definitely NOT encouraging.

Sheets gets injured all the time, so those of us who have Sheets on our teams have to have been expecting this to happen at some point in time. Hopefully he’ll avoid the DL. Sheets is one of those rare pitchers who manages to continue to be effective even if he’s been shelved for a few days here and there. That’s just sort of the way he is. However, any time off this season is discouraging.

The Brewers are likely to be cautious with Sheets, so pick up Yovani Gallardo if for some reason he’s still available in your league, and then hope that Sheets avoids the DL and puts this problem behind him. However, like the Brewers, we should all be making contingency plans.
